Chinese Ambassador Yu Dunhai Visits Nasarawa State

Yu Dunhai emphasises local mineral processing, technology transfer, youth skills development and environmental compliance

Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Yu Dunhai, has visited Nasarawa State and held talks with Governor Abdullahi Sule on strengthening cooperation in mining investment, local mineral processing, technology transfer and youth skills development.

The discussions focused on expanding economic and industrial partnerships between China and the state, particularly in developing mineral resources and strengthening local production capacity.

According to reports , Yu reaffirmed China's interest in supporting Nigeria's mining and industrial development, encouraging capable Chinese companies to explore investment opportunities in Nasarawa State.

He emphasised the importance of moving beyond raw mineral extraction towards local processing and value addition to support industrial growth and create employment opportunities.

The ambassador also stressed that Chinese enterprises operating in Nigeria should comply with local laws, environmental regulations and established business standards.

He encouraged investors to prioritise the training of Nigerian workers and the transfer of technical expertise to strengthen local industrial capacity.

Focus on Local Mineral Processing

Nasarawa State, located in North-Central Nigeria, is endowed with mineral resources, including lithium, and has attracted growing interest from investors in the solid minerals sector.

As Nigeria seeks to diversify its economy and reduce dependence on crude oil revenues, the development of domestic mineral processing facilities has become an important part of its industrialisation agenda.

The discussions between the ambassador and the governor highlighted opportunities to expand cooperation beyond mineral extraction into processing, industrial equipment, infrastructure and related services.

Local processing could enable Nigeria to retain greater value from its mineral resources, generate employment and strengthen its participation in regional and international industrial supply chains.

For Chinese investors, the sector presents potential opportunities in mining technology, processing equipment, industrial infrastructure and technical services.

Technology Transfer and Youth Training

The ambassador also underscored the importance of technical cooperation and workforce development.

He encouraged Chinese enterprises to support skills acquisition programmes that would enable Nigerian youths to gain practical experience in industrial production, equipment operation and mineral processing.

Such initiatives could contribute to Nigeria's efforts to address youth unemployment while developing the technical workforce required for industrial expansion.

Combining investment in production facilities with local training and technology transfer could also strengthen the long-term sustainability of mining and manufacturing projects.

Expanding Nigeria–China Industrial Partnerships

Economic cooperation between Nigeria and China has continued to expand from traditional trade and infrastructure development into energy, mining, manufacturing and industrial technology.

Nasarawa's mineral resources and proximity to the Federal Capital Territory offer opportunities for further investment, although successful project development will depend on adequate electricity supply, transport infrastructure, environmental management and skilled personnel.

The ambassador's visit reflects growing interest in strengthening Nigeria–China cooperation across the mineral value chain, with greater attention to domestic processing, technical capacity and sustainable industrial development.

However, available reports did not indicate whether new investment agreements were signed during the visit or provide details of additional project financing and implementation schedules.

Further progress will depend on project negotiations, investment commitments, regulatory approvals and implementation by participating enterprises.
