Nigeria-China Ties at 55 Shift Towards Industrial Investment, Local Production

Nigeria-China Industrial Investment Partnership
Nigeria and China are shifting their economic partnership from infrastructure and trade towards industrial investment, local production and value addition.
The shift comes as both countries mark 55 years of diplomatic relations.
Bilateral trade reached about $18 billion in the first half of 2026, up 35 per cent year-on-year.
Focus on Industrial Growth
Nigeria is seeking greater Chinese investment in power, mining, manufacturing, agriculture and digital technology.
In the power sector, Nigeria wants to move beyond traditional construction contracts towards joint investment in generation, transmission, solar energy, battery storage and electrical equipment.
Mining cooperation is also expanding into mineral processing and local value addition for resources such as lithium, gold, tin and iron ore.
Manufacturing and Digital Economy
Nigeria is encouraging Chinese companies to invest in steel, automobiles, electrical equipment, cold-chain facilities, sugar processing, data centres and telecommunications.
The goal is to combine Chinese technology and capital with Nigerian resources, labour and market demand.
Digital cooperation is also growing, with opportunities in artificial intelligence, cloud computing, digital payments and smart-city technologies.
Expanding Nigerian Exports
Agriculture remains important as Nigeria seeks greater access to the Chinese market.
China's zero-tariff policy for 53 African countries could create more opportunities for Nigerian exports, including sesame, cashew, cocoa, groundnuts and aquatic products.
The broader goal is to move from simply importing Chinese products towards building local industries and stronger Nigerian export capacity.
As Nigeria-China relations enter their next chapter, the focus is increasingly shifting from projects and trade volumes to factories, jobs, technology transfer and value-chain development.
