China and Nigeria Expand Artificial Intelligence Cooperation

China has signalled its readiness to deepen cooperation with Nigeria in artificial intelligence and the digital economy, marking a potential new phase in bilateral relations traditionally dominated by infrastructure, trade and industrial development.

Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Yu Dunhai, said China was prepared to strengthen strategic cooperation with Nigeria in industrialization, the digital economy, green development and the blue economy.

Yu also welcomed Nigeria and other countries to participate in the World Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Organization, an initiative aimed at strengthening international cooperation on artificial intelligence, including governance, capacity building and shared development opportunities.

The development places AI among the emerging areas of cooperation between Africa’s most populous country and the world’s second-largest economy.

For Nigeria, the significance could extend beyond software and emerging technologies.

With a population of more than 200 million and one of Africa’s largest digital markets, Nigeria has developed a rapidly expanding technology ecosystem, particularly in Lagos and other major cities.

Artificial intelligence is increasingly being explored across financial services, agriculture, healthcare, education, public administration and other sectors of the economy.

However, Nigeria’s ambitions in AI also face major structural challenges, including inadequate electricity supply, limited computing infrastructure, data-centre capacity, access to capital and shortages of specialised technical skills.

These gaps could open new areas for Nigeria-China cooperation.

Beyond AI applications, potential areas of collaboration could include data centres, cloud computing, telecommunications infrastructure, power systems, digital skills development, research and technology training.

Yu said China was also willing to strengthen the alignment between its development priorities and Nigeria’s Renewed Hope Agenda, while expanding cooperation in digitalisation and other emerging sectors.

The latest initiative reflects a broader transformation in China-Nigeria economic relations.

Over the past two decades, Chinese companies have played significant roles in the development of Nigeria’s railways, roads, ports, power facilities and telecommunications infrastructure.

The shift also comes as African governments seek to ensure that the continent does not remain merely a consumer of emerging technologies but develops its own technical skills, digital infrastructure and industrial capabilities.

For Nigeria, deeper AI cooperation could therefore become part of a wider strategy to strengthen productivity, develop local talent, attract technology investment and accelerate economic diversification.

As Nigeria and China mark 55 years of diplomatic relations in 2026, digital technology is emerging alongside energy, manufacturing and trade as another potential pillar of their comprehensive strategic partnership.

From building physical infrastructure to developing digital infrastructure, Nigeria-China cooperation may be entering a new technological frontier, one increasingly shaped by data, computing power and artificial intelligence.
