Xi Jinping and Faure Gnassingbé discuss stronger China-Togo relations, trade and investment in Beijing.

Zero-tariff market access, RMB transactions, industrialisation and African security dominate Beijing talks

Chinese President Xi Jinping on Tuesday met with Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé, President of Togo’s Council, at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, as both countries agreed to elevate bilateral relations to a community with a shared future in the new era.

The meeting focused on strengthening political trust and expanding cooperation in trade, investment, technology and regional security.

Xi said China and Togo enjoyed longstanding friendship and called for stronger high-level exchanges and practical cooperation.

Trade and investment featured prominently in the discussions.

Xi encouraged Togo to take advantage of China's zero-tariff policy for African products and special export “green lanes” to increase exports to the Chinese market.

He also welcomed Togo's initiative to expand the cross-border use of the Chinese yuan, or renminbi (RMB), as part of efforts to facilitate international trade transactions.

Both leaders expressed interest in expanding cooperation in renewable energy, digital technology and intelligent systems to support Togo's industrialisation and economic transformation.

Gnassingbé commended China's modernisation achievements and welcomed greater Chinese investment in Togo, particularly in infrastructure, trade, science and technology.

He noted that both countries would celebrate the 55th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2027, describing the milestone as an opportunity to deepen bilateral cooperation.

Regional peace and security also featured in the talks.

Xi outlined four principles for resolving African conflicts, including African-led solutions, respect for national sovereignty and international law, peaceful dialogue, and addressing the underlying causes of insecurity through sustainable development.

Gnassingbé expressed support for the principles and pledged closer multilateral cooperation with China to protect the interests of developing countries.

The upgraded partnership is expected to create opportunities in West African trade logistics, infrastructure, renewable energy and digital development.

Togo's strategic position as a regional port and logistics hub could also strengthen commercial links between China and the wider West African market.

The development reflects China's growing emphasis on industrial investment, technology transfer and regional economic integration in its engagement with African countries.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi attended the meeting.
