Chinese President Xi Jinping has called on China and the United States to turn their new vision for a constructive relationship into practical action, stressing cooperation, mutual benefit and the proper management of differences.

Xi made the call on Thursday during a meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House in Washington, D.C. The Chinese leader said the two countries should build a relationship based on cooperation as the mainstay, moderate competition, manageable differences and a shared commitment to peace.

Xi noted that his meetings and continued communication with Trump had helped guide China-U.S. relations, adding that the two countries can achieve mutually beneficial outcomes through practical cooperation and healthy competition. He also welcomed a new joint arrangement reached during the latest round of economic and trade consultations between the two countries, describing it as positive news for industries and people in China and the United States, as well as the global economy.

According to Xi, a stable economic and trade relationship requires both sides to expand areas of cooperation while reducing outstanding problems. He urged both countries to uphold equality, mutual respect and mutual benefit in addressing trade and economic issues.

AI cooperation

Artificial intelligence was also a key issue during the meeting. Xi said China and the United States, as major AI powers, have strong reasons to cooperate despite competition in the sector. He called for greater dialogue on the risks and benefits of AI and cooperation to prevent its misuse and abuse. Xi also stressed the need for human control over AI technologies and a people-centred approach to ensure the technology serves human progress.

On Taiwan, Xi reiterated China's position on national reunification and territorial integrity and called on the United States to oppose Taiwan independence and handle the issue cautiously. Trump, for his part, described Xi's visit to the United States as a great visit and said the two countries could manage their relations under the leadership of both presidents. He also said the latest economic and trade consultations had produced new outcomes and called for continued dialogue toward a better agreement.

On AI, Trump said China and the United States should maintain dialogue and strengthen cooperation, noting that the technology has implications for the future of humanity. The two leaders also discussed major international and regional issues, including the Middle East situation, the Ukraine crisis and the Korean Peninsula. They further agreed that China and the United States would support each other in hosting the 2026 APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting and the G20 Leaders' Summit.
