CHINA, NIGERIA MARK 55 YEARS OF DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS AS 77TH NATIONAL DAY CELEBRATION SIGNALS DEEPER COOPERATION

China-Nigeria Relations
China and Nigeria have reaffirmed their commitment to deepening bilateral cooperation. The two countries mark 55 years of diplomatic relations as China celebrates the 77th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China.
The message featured prominently at a reception held on September 23 at the Congress Hall of Transcorp Hilton Abuja. The event celebrated China’s 77th National Day.
About 600 guests attended the event. They included senior Nigerian government officials, Chinese diplomats, members of the diplomatic corps, business leaders and representatives from different sectors. The attendance highlighted the depth of relations between the two countries.
China Highlights New Opportunities for Cooperation
Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Yu Dunhai, said China’s development experience and rapidly advancing technologies are creating new opportunities for international cooperation.
He said China is advancing national development and rejuvenation through Chinese modernisation. Its expanding new-energy supply chain is also supporting the country’s green transition and contributing to global energy stability and sustainable development.
Ambassador Yu encouraged Nigerians to take advantage of emerging opportunities. He called for stronger partnerships capable of supporting economic development, industrial upgrading and technological advancement.
Nigeria Highlights Expanding Bilateral Relations
On the Nigerian side, representing President Bola Tinubu, the Minister of Power and Director-General of the Nigeria-China Strategic Partnership, Joseph Tegbe, highlighted the steady expansion of bilateral relations. This dates back to when China and Nigeria established diplomatic ties on February 10, 1971.
Over the past 55 years, cooperation between the two countries has expanded beyond traditional diplomacy. It now covers infrastructure, trade and investment, energy and power, agriculture, manufacturing, transportation, education and cultural exchanges.
Major projects, including the Lekki Deep Sea Port and Nigeria’s railway modernisation programme, were highlighted as examples of infrastructure cooperation between China and Nigeria.
Energy and Manufacturing Emerging as New Areas
Looking ahead, Nigeria is seeking deeper cooperation with China in renewable energy, power equipment manufacturing, local production and investment. The country is working to strengthen its electricity sector and expand its industrial capacity.
Energy, manufacturing and emerging technologies are increasingly becoming new areas of growth in China-Nigeria cooperation.
Culture and People-to-People Exchanges
The reception also featured traditional Chinese music, costumes and cultural performances. These added a strong cultural dimension to the celebration and underscored the importance of people-to-people exchanges in strengthening mutual understanding between the two countries.
Among the dignitaries present were the Consul-General of the People’s Republic of China in Lagos, Yan Yuqing; Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang; Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Abubakar Bagudu; members of Nigeria’s National Assembly; diplomats; and representatives of the business community.
China-Africa Cooperation Continues to Evolve
The People’s Republic of China was founded on October 1, 1949. Over the past 77 years, China has recorded significant development in manufacturing, infrastructure, science and technology, and renewable energy.
During the same period, China-Africa cooperation has continued to evolve. It has moved beyond traditional trade and infrastructure development into investment, manufacturing, green energy, the digital economy and technological innovation.
A Shared Date of National Significance
October 1 also carries a unique significance for both countries. China celebrates its National Day on the same date that Nigeria marks its Independence Day. The shared date has become a distinctive symbolic connection in the longstanding friendship between the two nations.
From railways and ports to power, renewable energy and manufacturing, and from traditional trade and investment to emerging sectors such as artificial intelligence and robotics, the scope of China-Nigeria cooperation continues to expand.
The National Day reception in Abuja sent a clear message. Building on more than five decades of diplomatic relations and extensive infrastructure cooperation, China and Nigeria are increasingly looking towards investment, industrial development, technology and innovation as the next frontiers of their partnership.
