Honourable Peter Udogalanya speaks on Nigeria-China cooperation and investment opportunities in Anambra State.

Two nations celebrate on the same October 1 as China and Nigeria mark 55 years of diplomatic relations

As China marks the 77th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China and Nigeria celebrates its 66th Independence Day, the two countries are commemorating their national milestones on the same day October 1.

This year carries additional significance as China and Nigeria also mark the 55th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations.

On the occasion of the two national celebrations, Honourable Peter Udogalanya, a member of Nigeria’s House of Representatives from Anambra State, spoke with Africa China Chairmen of Business Council Forum(ACCBCF) in a special interview on the significance of October 1, China’s role in Nigeria’s development, investment opportunities in Anambra State, and the future of Nigeria-China relations.

Hon Udogalanya described China as an important partner in Nigeria’s development, citing investment, critical infrastructure and new development opportunities.

He also highlighted Anambra State’s potential in commerce, industry, agriculture, oil and gas, and mineral resources, while welcoming greater Chinese investment in the state.

A Shared October 1

Asked what it means for Nigeria and China to share October 1 as an important national day, Udogalanya said the occasion offered an opportunity to reflect on how nations can transform sovereignty into economic development.

“Sharing October 1st with China is a powerful reminder of how far a nation can go when it commits to building its own future,” he said.

“Both our countries fought hard for their independence, but China showed the world how to turn national sovereignty into real economic power.”

He said China’s engagement with Nigeria has expanded over the years through investment and infrastructure development.

“Over the years, China has become a vital partner in Nigeria’s progress through major investments, critical infrastructure, and new developmental opportunities.”

His remarks highlighted a broader question facing many developing economies: how political independence and national sovereignty can be translated into stronger productive capacity, industrial development and sustainable economic growth.

Anambra: A Commercial and Industrial Hub

Turning to Anambra State, Hon Udogalanya described the state as an important centre of commerce and industry in southeastern Nigeria.

“Anambra State serves as the commercial gateway and industrial heartbeat of Southeast Nigeria,” he said.

“Driven by indigenous enterprise, high human capital, and strategic trade corridors, the state offers immense value across domestic and international markets.”

He said agriculture also represents an important area for foreign investment, noting the long-standing participation of Anambra communities in agricultural activities.

“Anambra people are also known for their agricultural activities, which is also a sector to be considered in terms of foreign investments.”

Hon Udogalanya further pointed to the state’s status as an oil-producing state and highlighted natural gas, crude oil, bauxite and industrial clay among the resources he said could support future economic development.

Taken together, he presented Anambra as an investment destination built around several economic pillars — commerce, manufacturing, agriculture, energy and mineral resources.

Chinese Investors Welcomed in Anambra

Hon Udogalanya also extended an invitation to Chinese investors interested in exploring opportunities in the state.

“Chinese investors are welcomed into the state for development, but it will have to come through the Governor of the state,” he said.

His remarks underscored the importance of engagement with the Anambra State Government when developing major investment projects.

For Chinese companies considering Anambra, potential areas of cooperation could extend from manufacturing and agro-processing to energy, electrical equipment, machinery and industrial value chains, depending on specific projects, regulatory requirements and commercial feasibility.

Such cooperation could also support a broader transition in Nigeria- China economic relations from traditional trade and infrastructure projects toward investment, local production, technology cooperation and deeper industrial partnerships.

A National Day Message to China and Nigeria

At the conclusion of the interview, Udogalanya extended congratulations to both countries and expressed hope for stronger bilateral relations.

“I congratulate the good people of Nigeria on the celebration of their independence, and I also congratulate the good people of China on this celebration of their National Day as a republic nation,” he said.

He added:

“My sincere wish is that the relationship between the two nations continues to grow and the nations will be blessed with good leaders to move the two nations forward.”

77 Years, 66 Years, 55 Years

October 1, 2026 brings together three significant milestones:

77 years since the founding of the People’s Republic of China.

66 years since Nigeria gained independence. s
