President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and French President Emmanuel Macron have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening relations between Nigeria and France following a private dinner at the Élysée Palace in Paris.

The high-level meeting brought the two leaders together for discussions centred on the longstanding partnership between both countries and the need to deepen cooperation in areas of mutual interest.

The dinner, held on Thursday, September 17, was hosted by Macron during Tinubu’s visit to France. Details of the private discussions were not publicly disclosed, but Nigerian officials said the engagement underscored the enduring friendship between Nigeria and France.

Tinubu, Macron Reaffirm Bilateral Partnership

Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, disclosed the meeting, describing it as part of continuing efforts to strengthen the relationship between the two countries.

The Nigerian president also highlighted the importance of the relationship, saying the conversation with Macron reaffirmed the friendship between Nigeria and France and their shared interest in building a stronger partnership.

For Nigeria, France remains an important European partner, with cooperation spanning trade, investment, energy, infrastructure, security, innovation and the creative economy.

The latest engagement therefore comes at a time when Nigeria is seeking to attract more foreign investment and expand economic partnerships beyond traditional areas of cooperation.

Economic Cooperation Remains Key

While no specific new agreement from the private dinner was publicly announced, the broader Nigeria-France relationship has significant economic dimensions.

France has maintained business and investment interests in Nigeria, while Nigerian companies and institutions continue to engage with French counterparts across several sectors.

Greater cooperation could create opportunities for investment, technology partnerships and private-sector collaboration, particularly as Nigeria continues efforts to strengthen its industrial base and attract international capital.

The two countries also have shared interests in addressing security challenges, supporting regional stability and promoting sustainable economic development.

A Broader International Partnership

Tinubu’s meeting with Macron also forms part of Nigeria’s wider diplomatic engagement with major global partners.

Under Tinubu, Nigeria has continued to pursue stronger economic and diplomatic relationships with countries across Europe, Asia, the Middle East and Africa, with investment, trade and development cooperation remaining major priorities.

For France, Nigeria is one of Africa’s largest economies and a significant political and economic partner on the continent.

The latest meeting therefore provides another opportunity for both governments to reinforce their relationship at the highest level.

Although the details of the private dinner remain undisclosed, the message emerging from the engagement is clear: Nigeria and France want to maintain and deepen their longstanding partnership, with economic cooperation and other areas of mutual interest likely to remain central to the relationship.
